Commentary
It is narrated that the wives of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: O Messenger of Allah, Allah mentioned men in the Qur'an with good. Is there not good in us that we may be mentioned with? We fear that our obedience may not be accepted. [[Narrated by al-Tabarani and Ibn Mardawayh from the narration of Ibn Thabyan from Ibn Abbas: "The women said: O Messenger of Allah, why are we not mentioned in the Qur'an ... the hadith."]] And it was said that the one asking was Umm Salamah. [[Narrated by al-Nasa'i from the narration of Sharik from Muhammad ibn Umar from Abu Salamah from Umm Salamah who said: "O Messenger of Allah, why do I hear men being mentioned in the Qur'an and women are not mentioned? Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed: 'Indeed, the Muslim men and the Muslim women...' and it was narrated by al-Tabarani and al-Tabari from another source from Muhammad ibn Umar. It was narrated by Ahmad, Ibn Rahwayh, and al-Nasa'i from the narration of Uthman ibn Hakim from Abdul Rahman ibn Shaybah from Umm Salamah. Al-Hakim narrated it through Mujahid from Umm Salamah, and al-Tirmidhi narrated something similar from Umm 'Amarah.]]
It is narrated that when what was revealed concerning the wives of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, was revealed, the women of the Muslims said: What has been revealed concerning us? [[Narrated by al-Tabari from the narration of Sa'id from Qatadah who said: "A group of believing women entered upon the wives of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, and said: Allah has mentioned us in the Qur'an - the hadith. And it was narrated by Ibn Sa'd from al-Waqidi from Ma'mar from Qatadah.]] Then it was revealed. The Muslim is the one who enters into peace after war, the one who submits and does not oppose, or the one who entrusts his affairs to Allah, relying on Him, who has submitted his face to Allah. The believer is the one who believes in Allah and His Messenger and in what must be believed in.
And the qanit is the one who is steadfast in obedience and continues in it. The truthful is the one who is truthful in his intention, words, and actions. The patient is the one who is patient in obedience and refrains from sins. The humble is the one who humbles himself to Allah with his heart and limbs. It is said that when he prays, he does not know what is on his right and left. The one who gives charity is the one who purifies his wealth and does not neglect the supererogatory acts. It is said: Whoever gives charity in a week with a dirham is among the charitable. And whoever fasts the white days of each month is among the fasters.
And the one who remembers Allah much is the one who hardly ever is free from the remembrance of Allah with his heart or tongue or both. Reading the Qur'an and engaging in knowledge is part of the remembrance. And the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "Whoever wakes up from his sleep and wakes his wife, and they both pray two rak'ahs together, they are recorded among those who remember Allah much, both men and women." [[Narrated by the compilers of the Sunan except for al-Tirmidhi from the narration of al-Agharr from Abu Sa'id and Abu Hurairah, raised to the Prophet.]] The meaning is: and the ones who preserve it and the ones who remember, and this was omitted because the apparent meaning indicates it. If you ask: What is the difference between the conjunctions, meaning the conjunction of females to males, and the conjunction of spouses to spouses? I say: The first conjunction is like His saying, the Exalted, 'Thayyibat and Abkar' in that they are two different kinds. When they share in a ruling, it is necessary to place a conjunction between them. As for the second conjunction, it is the conjunction of description to description with a conjunction particle, as if its meaning is: Indeed, those who gather and those who gather these acts of obedience, Allah has prepared for them.
