Commentary
A group of men from the Companions vowed that if they encountered war with the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, they would stand firm and fight until they were martyred. Among them were: Uthman ibn Affan, Talhah ibn Ubaydullah, and Sa'id ibn Zayd ibn Amr ibn Nufail. Hamzah, Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr, and others, may Allah be pleased with them. Some of them fulfilled their vow, meaning Hamzah and Mus'ab, and some of them are waiting, meaning Uthman and Talhah. In the hadith, "Whoever loves to see a martyr walking on the face of the earth, let him look at Talhah" [[Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, and al-Hakim through the route of al-Salt ibn Dinar from Abu Nasrah from Jabir. Al-Salt is weak, and there is another route in al-Tabarani from the route of the sons of Talhah from Talhah.]] If you ask: What is the fulfillment of the vow? I say: It is an expression for death, because every living being must die. It is as if it is a necessary vow upon him, so when he dies, he has fulfilled his vow, meaning: his vow. And his saying, "Some of them fulfilled their vow" can mean his death as a martyr, and it can mean fulfilling his vow by standing firm with the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him. If you ask: What is the truth of his saying, "They were true to what they pledged to Allah"? I say: It is said: Your brother told me the truth and lied to me, if he told you the truth and lies. As for the example: "He told me the truth about the age of his camel." Its meaning is: He told me the truth about the age of his camel, by dropping the harsh and conveying the action. So, what they pledged to Allah can either be like the age in dropping the harsh, or the pledge can be made true in a metaphorical sense, as if they said to the one who is pledged: We will fulfill it for you, and they are fulfilling it, so they have been truthful to him. If they were to break it, they would have lied to him, and it would have been a lie. They did not change the covenant nor alter it, neither the martyr nor the one waiting for martyrdom. Indeed, Talhah stood firm with the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, on the Day of Uhud until his hand was injured. The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said, "Talhah has earned his right" [[Narrated by al-Thalabi from the narration of Harir ibn Hazim from 'Urwah regarding the verse, "Among the believers are men who have been true to what they pledged to Allah" - the verse - among them is Talhah ibn Ubaydullah, and he mentioned it. It has been narrated separately from this route. His case is that his hand was injured. Al-Bukhari narrated it from the narration of Qays ibn Abi Hazim: "I saw Talhah's hand paralyzed, and he was with the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, on the Day of Uhud," and al-Nasa'i from the route of 'Imarah ibn Ghaziyah from Abu al-Zubair from Jabir said, "On the Day of Uhud, the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, was in a corner with twelve men from the Ansar. He mentioned the story in detail, saying, 'Talhah has earned his right.'" Al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Hibban, al-Hakim, Ibn Abi Shaybah, Ishaq, Abu Ya'la, and al-Bazzar narrated it from the route of Muhammad ibn Ishaq from Yahya ibn 'Abbad ibn 'Ubaydullah ibn al-Zubair from his father with it.]] In it is an allusion to those who changed from the people of hypocrisy and the sickness of hearts: the hypocrites, as if they aimed for a bad end and desired it by their alteration, just as the truthful aimed for the end of truth by their fulfillment, because both groups are driven to their end of reward and punishment. It is as if they are equal in their pursuit and striving to attain them. And He may punish them if He wills if they do not repent, or He may accept their repentance if they repent. And Allah turned back those who disbelieved the confederates with their rage, and they were filled with rage, as His saying, "It grows with oil." They did not attain any good, being unsuccessful, and they are in two states of intermingling or succession. It is possible that the second is an explanation of the first or a continuation. And Allah sufficed the believers in fighting with the wind and the angels, and He brought down those who supported the confederates from the People of the Book from their fortresses. And a fortress is what one fortifies with. It is said for the horn of the bull and the gazelle: fortress, and for the thorn of the rooster, which is its claw in its leg, because it fortifies itself with it. It is narrated that Gabriel, peace be upon him, came to the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, on the morning after the night in which the confederates were defeated and the Muslims returned to the city and laid down their weapons.
What is this, O Gabriel? He said: It is from the following of Quraysh. So the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, began to wipe the dust from the face of the horse and from the saddle. He said: O Messenger of Allah, the angels have not put down their weapons. Allah commands you to march towards Banu Qurayzah, and I am heading towards them. Indeed, Allah has crushed them like the crushing of eggs on a stone, and they are a bounty for you. So announce to the people: Whoever is listening and obedient should not pray the afternoon prayer except in Banu Qurayzah. Many of the people did not pray the afternoon prayer except after the night prayer, due to the words of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him. He besieged them for twenty-five nights until the siege became hard on them. Then the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said to them: Will you submit to my judgment? They refused. He said: To the judgment of Sa'd ibn Mu'adh? They accepted it. Sa'd said: I have judged that their fighters be killed and their children and women be taken captive. The Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: 'You have judged by the judgment of Allah from above seven heavens.' Then he had them taken down and dug a trench in the market of the city, and he presented them and struck their necks, and they were from eight hundred to nine hundred, and it was said they were six hundred fighters and seven hundred captives. It is in the biography of Ibn Hisham regarding the battle of Banu Qurayzah from Ibn Ishaq to the last part, and Ibn Ishaq narrated it from Asim ibn Umar from Abdur Rahman that Umar ibn Sa'd ibn Mu'adh from Alqamah ibn Qais al-Laythi said that the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, mentioned it. And it was narrated that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, allocated their property to the immigrants instead of the helpers. The helpers spoke about this, and he said: You are in your homes. Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said: Will you not divide it as you divided on the day of Badr? He said: No, I have made this a bounty for me alone, not for the people. He said: We are pleased with what Allah and His Messenger have done. And a land that you have not trodden, according to Al-Hasan, may Allah be pleased with him: Persia and Rome. And according to Qatadah, may Allah be pleased with him: We used to say it is Mecca. And according to Muqatil, may Allah be pleased with him: It is Khaybar. And according to Ikrimah: Every land that is opened until the Day of Resurrection. And among the strange interpretations is that he meant their women.
