Allah promised them that they would be shaken until they called upon Him and sought His help in His saying: "Or did you think that you would enter Paradise while there has not yet come to you the example of those who passed on before you?" So when the confederates came and they were shaken and terrified with a great terror, they said: "This is what Allah and His Messenger promised us," and they were certain of Paradise and victory. And Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said to his companions: "The confederates are coming to you in nine or ten," meaning: in the last nine nights or ten. So when they saw them approaching for the appointed time, they said that. This is an indication of the calamity or trial in faith in Allah and His promises and submission to His decrees and destinies.
