Commentary
Al-Fath: victory, or the separation by judgment, from His saying, "Our Lord, decide between us." The Muslims used to say that Allah would grant them victory over the polytheists. And He would separate between us and them. When the polytheists heard this, they said, "When will this victory be? At what time will it occur, if you are truthful that it will happen?" And the Day of Victory is the Day of Resurrection, which is the day of separation between the believers and their enemies, and the day of their victory over them. It is said to be the Day of Badr. And from Mujahid and Al-Hasan, may Allah be pleased with them, it is the Day of the Conquest of Mecca. If you say: They asked about the time of victory, how does this statement apply as an answer to their question? I say: Their purpose in asking about the time of victory was their impatience and their disbelief and mockery. So they were answered according to what was known of their purpose in their question. They were told: Do not be impatient for it and do not mock. It is as if I see you having obtained that day and you believed, but your belief did not benefit you, and you awaited the punishment but were not given respite. If you say: How does the interpretation of it as the Day of Victory or the Day of Badr align with the idea that their belief will not benefit them, when the pardoned ones benefited on the Day of the Conquest of Mecca and some on the Day of Badr? I say: The intended meaning is that the killed among them will not benefit from their belief at the time of killing, just as Pharaoh's belief did not benefit him when he was drowning. And wait for victory over them and their destruction. Indeed, they are waiting for victory over you and your destruction, as His saying goes, "So wait, indeed we are waiting with you." Ibn Al-Samiqah, may Allah have mercy on him, read: "waiting," with the dhad open. Its meaning is: And wait for their destruction, for they are deserving of waiting for their destruction, meaning they are surely doomed. Or wait for that, for the angels in the heavens are waiting for it. From the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him: "Whoever recites Alif Lam Meem, and Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the dominion, will be given a reward as if he had revived the Night of Decree." [Narrated by Al-Thalabi, Ibn Mardawayh, and Al-Wahidi from Abu, and there is another chain from Al-Thalabi narrated by Abu Asimah from Zayd Al-Ami from Abu Basrah from Ibn Abbas from Abu. And there is another version from Ibn Mardawayh from Nafi from Ibn Umar. In its chain is Dawood bin Muadh, who is weak.]" And he said: "Whoever recites Alif Lam Meem in his house, the devil will not enter his house for three days." [I did not find it.]
