Commentary
The Book is for the gender and the pronoun in His meeting with him. Its meaning is: Indeed, We have given Moses, peace be upon him, what We have given you of the Book, and We met him as We met you with revelation. So do not be in doubt that you have met something like it and you have encountered its equivalent, as His saying: 'So if you are in doubt about what We have sent down to you, ask those who read the Book before you.' And similar to His saying regarding his meeting: 'And indeed, you will receive the Qur'an from One who is Wise and Knowing.' And His saying: 'And We will bring forth for him on the Day of Resurrection a Book which he will encounter spread open.' And We made the Book revealed to Moses, peace be upon him, a guidance for his people, and We made from them leaders who guide the people and call them to what is in the Torah of the religion of Allah and His laws, due to their patience and their certainty in the signs. Likewise, We will make the Book revealed to you a guidance and light, and We will make from your nation leaders who guide to such guidance because of their patience in supporting the religion and their steadfastness in certainty.
It is said: from your meeting with Moses, peace be upon him, on the Night of Isra or on the Day of Resurrection. It is also said: from the meeting of Moses, peace be upon him, with the Book, meaning: from receiving it with acceptance and approval. And it is read: 'for their patience,' and 'for their patience,' meaning because of their patience. And from Al-Hasan, may Allah be pleased with him: they were patient regarding the world. It is said that Allah made the Torah a guidance specifically for the Children of Israel, and the children of Ishmael, peace be upon him, were not commanded by what is in it. He distinguishes between them, so He judges, to differentiate the truth from falsehood in their religion.
