Commentary
Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, recited: "And whoever submits with emphasis, it is said: Submit your affair and surrender your affair to Allah." If you say: Why is it governed by 'to' (إلى), while it is governed by 'with' (باللام) in the saying: "Yes, whoever submits his face to Allah"? I say: Its meaning with 'with' (باللام) is that he made his face, which is his essence and self, safe for Allah, meaning pure for Him. And its meaning with 'to' (إلى) is that he surrendered his self to Him, just as one surrenders goods to a man when handed over to him. The intended meaning is reliance upon Him and entrusting to Him. Indeed, he has clung to the firmest handhold. As an example: I liken the state of the one who relies to that of someone who wishes to dangle from a height, so he takes precautions for himself by holding onto the firmest handhold of a strong rope that is secure from breaking. And to Allah belongs the outcome of all matters, meaning it will ultimately return to Him.
