Commentary
And certainly, we have described to them every attribute as if it were a parable in its strangeness. We have narrated to them every story of remarkable significance, such as the description of those who are resurrected on the Day of Resurrection, and their story, and what they say and what is said to them, and what does not benefit from their excuses nor is heard from their pleas. But due to the hardness of their hearts and the dullness of their hearing regarding the Hereafter, when you come to them with a sign from the signs of the Qur'an, they say: 'You have brought us falsehood and lies.' Then he said: 'Such is the sealing that Allah places upon the hearts of the ignorant.' The meaning of Allah's sealing is the prevention of the graces that cause the hearts to open up to accept the truth. It is only prevented from them because they know that it will not be of any benefit to them nor will it suffice them, just as the preacher's admonition is prevented from reaching one who realizes that the admonition is futile and will not be effective for him. Thus, this is a metaphor for the hardness of their hearts and the rust and corrosion upon them. It is as if he said: 'Thus, the hearts of the ignorant become hard and rusty, until they call the truthful ones liars, while they are the most entrenched of Allah's creation in that attribute. So be patient with their enmity. Indeed, the promise of Allah to support you and manifest your religion over all other religions is true and must be fulfilled and honored. Do not let their words and actions cause you to act lightly or anxiously, for they are a people who are doubtful and misguided, and it is not surprising for them to behave in that manner.' And it has been read with the lightening of the noon. Ibn Abi Ishaq and Ya'qub read: 'And do not let them cause you to falter,' meaning: 'Do not let them tempt you to dominate you and be more deserving of you than the believers.' From the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him: 'Whoever recites Surah Ar-Rum will have ten good deeds for every angel that glorifies Allah between the heavens and the earth, and he will recover what he has lost in his day and night.'
