So they saw it, they saw the effect of Allah's mercy. For Allah's mercy is the rain, and its effect is the vegetation. And whoever reads in the plural: the pronoun returns to its meaning because the meaning of the effects of mercy is vegetation, and the name of vegetation applies to both little and much, because it is a source by which what grows is named. And 'Lain': it is the letter that emphasizes the oath, it has entered upon the conditional particle, and 'La-zallu' is the answer to the oath, which serves as the substitute for the two answers, namely: the answer to the oath and the answer to the condition. Its meaning is: they will certainly remain in the blame of Allah, the Exalted, because when the rain is withheld from them, they despair of His mercy and strike their chins on their chests in despair. But when He bestows His mercy upon them and provides them with rain: they rejoice and are delighted. Then, if He sends a wind that turns their crops yellow, they complain and deny Allah's blessing. They are in the gathering of these states in a blameworthy manner. They should have relied on Allah and His grace, but they despaired. They should have been grateful for His blessing and praised Him for it, but they did not increase beyond joy and delight. They should have been patient with His trial, but they denied. And the wind that caused the vegetation to turn yellow: it may be hot and scorching, for both are among that which dries up the vegetation and turns it to dust. And he said: 'yellowing' because that is a new yellowing. And it was said: they saw the cloud yellow, because when it is like that, it does not rain.
