Commentary
He shortened the path to the objective by including the mention of the two opposing sides under the mention of victory and triumph, although the speech initially omitted their mention. And His saying, 'It was a right upon Us to help the believers' is an exaltation of the believers, a raising of their status, a qualification for a noble honor, and a manifestation of a prior virtue and distinction. He made them deserving of Allah's help, and made it incumbent upon Him to grant them victory and success. And it may be understood as: 'And the vengeance against them was truly a right.' Then it begins: 'It was a right upon Us to help the believers.' And about the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, it is narrated: 'There is no Muslim who defends the honor of his brother except that it is a right upon Allah to protect him from the fire of Hell on the Day of Resurrection.' [Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, Ahmad, and al-Tabarani from the hadith of Abu Darda, and it is considered good. It was also narrated by Ishaq, al-Tabarani, Abu Ya'la, and Ibn Adi through the route of Shahb ibn Hushab from Asma' bint Yazid, raised to the Prophet, in a similar manner, and its chain is weak. There is a difference regarding Shahb ibn Hushab: some say he narrated it this way, and Lyth ibn Abi Sulaym narrated it from Abu Huraira, as reported by Ibn Mardawayh.] Then he recited the saying of Allah, 'It was a right upon Us to help the believers.'
