The right of relatives is the connection of kinship. The right of the poor and the traveler is their share of the specified charity for them.

Abu Hanifa, may Allah have mercy on him, used this verse as evidence for the obligation of spending on relatives if they are in need and unable to earn. According to Al-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, there is no obligation of spending on relatives except for children and parents. He analogized other relatives to the cousin, as there is no lineage between them.

If you say: How is the saying 'So give to the near relative' connected to what came before it, such that the conjunction 'fa' (so) was used? I say: When it was mentioned that the evil has befallen them because of what their hands have sent forth, it was followed by mentioning what must be done and what must be left, 'They seek the face of Allah.' It is possible that 'His face' refers to His essence or His direction and side, meaning: they intend their kindness towards Him sincerely and His right, as His saying: 'Except seeking the face of their Lord, the Most High.' Or they intend the direction of drawing closer to Allah, not another direction. The two meanings are close, but the method is different.
