Commentary
The tongues: the languages. Or the kinds of speech and its forms. Allah, the Exalted and Mighty, differentiated between these things so that you can hardly hear two speakers agreeing in one whisper, nor in loudness, nor in sharpness, nor in softness, nor in eloquence, nor in accent, nor in structure, nor in style, nor in other characteristics and states of speech. Likewise, the shapes and their designs, and the colors and their variations. Due to this difference, familiarity occurs; otherwise, if they were to agree and resemble each other and were of one type, ignorance and confusion would ensue, and many interests would be hindered. Perhaps you have seen twins who resemble each other in appearance, and you may be mistaken in distinguishing between them. You recognize the wisdom of Allah in the differences among adornments, and in that is a clear sign, as they were born from one father and branched from a unique origin, and they are numerous in a way that only Allah knows, differing and varying. And it has been recited: 'for the worlds' with an open 'lam' and a broken 'lam.' The broken form is supported by His saying: 'And none knows it except the scholars.'
