Commentary
All food, all types of food. And 'halal' is a source. It is said: something becomes halal, as you say: the animal became humbled, and the man became honored. In the narration of Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her: I used to perfume it for its halal and haram [[agreed upon in her narration.]] Therefore, it is equal in description for both masculine and feminine, singular and plural. Allah, the Exalted, says: 'No, they are halal for them.' And what Israel, which is Jacob, peace be upon him, prohibited for himself were the meats of camels and their milk, and it is said the sinews. He had sciatica, so he vowed that if he was healed, he would prohibit for himself his favorite food, and that was his favorite, so he prohibited it. It is said that the doctors advised him to avoid it, and he did so by the permission of Allah, so it is like the prohibition of Allah from the beginning. The meaning is that all foods were always halal for the Children of Israel before the Torah was revealed and the prohibition of what was prohibited for them due to their injustice and transgression. Nothing was prohibited from it before that except for the one food that their father Israel prohibited for himself, and they followed him in his prohibition. This is a refutation against the Jews and a denial of them, as they wanted to exonerate themselves from what was criticized against them in Allah's saying: 'So, due to the injustice of those who became Jews, We prohibited them good things that had been lawful for them' until Allah's saying: 'a painful punishment.' And in His saying: 'And upon those who became Jews, We prohibited every clawed animal, and from cattle and sheep, We prohibited their fats' until His saying: 'That is a recompense We gave them for their transgression.' And their denial of what angered them and made them disgusted [[The phrase 'and made them disgusted' means they were angry and found it difficult, as indicated by the dictionaries. (A)]] from what the Quran stated about the prohibition of good things upon them due to their transgression and injustice. They said: 'We are not the first to be prohibited upon; it is only an ancient prohibition, which was prohibited for Noah and Abraham and those after him from the Children of Israel, and so on, until the prohibition reached us, so it was prohibited for us as it was prohibited for those before us.' Their aim is to deny Allah's testimony against them regarding transgression and injustice and turning away from the path of Allah and consuming usury and taking people's wealth unjustly, and the enumerated evils of theirs that every time they committed a major sin, a type of good things was prohibited for them as a punishment. Say: 'Then bring the Torah and recite it.' It is a command to argue with them using their book and to confront them with what it clearly states, that the prohibition of what was prohibited for them is a recent prohibition due to their injustice and transgression, not an ancient prohibition as they claim. It was narrated that they did not dare to bring out the Torah and were dumbfounded and turned back humbled. In that is clear evidence of the truth of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, and the permissibility of abrogation which they deny. So whoever fabricates lies against Allah by claiming that this was prohibited for the Children of Israel before the revelation of the Torah after the decisive evidence was established against them, then those are the wrongdoers, the arrogant who do not do justice to themselves and do not pay attention to the clear signs.
