Commentary

You will not attain righteousness until you spend of that which you love. And it was said: You will not attain the righteousness of Allah, which is His reward, until you spend of that which you love. So your spending must be from your wealth that you love and prefer, as His saying: "Spend from the good things you have earned." The early generations, may Allah have mercy on them, when they loved something, they would dedicate it to Allah. It is narrated that when this verse was revealed, Abu Talhah came and said: O Messenger of Allah, the most beloved of my wealth to me is Bayrah, so place it, O Messenger of Allah, wherever Allah shows you. The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "Well done, that is a profitable wealth, or a valuable wealth, and I see that you should give it to your relatives." Abu Talhah said: Do so, O Messenger of Allah, so he distributed it among his relatives. Zaid ibn Harithah came with a horse he loved and said: This is in the way of Allah. The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, mounted Usamah ibn Zaid on it. It seemed that Zaid felt something in himself and said: I only intended to give it as charity. The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: Indeed, Allah, the Exalted, has accepted it from you. Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, wrote to Abu Musa al-Ash'ari to buy him a female slave from the captives of Jalula on the day the cities of Kisra were opened. When she came, he liked her and said: Indeed, Allah, the Exalted, says: "You will not attain righteousness until you spend of that which you love," so he freed her. Abu Dharr received a guest and said to the shepherd: Bring me the best of my camels. He brought him a weak she-camel. He said: You have betrayed me. He said: I found the best of the camels, so I brought it. He mentioned the day of your need for it and said: Indeed, the day of my need for it is the day I will be placed in my grave. Abdullah read: until you spend some of what you love. This is evidence that "from" in: "of that which you love" indicates a part. And similarly: I took from the wealth. And "from" in "from something" is to clarify what you spend, meaning from any good thing you love or from something bad that you dislike. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing of everything you spend, so He will reward you accordingly.
