The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, was commanded to inform about himself and those with him regarding faith. Therefore, he used the singular pronoun in 'Say' and the plural in 'We have believed.' It is permissible for him to speak about himself as kings do, in honor of Allah for the status of His Prophet. If you say: Why is 'revealed' in this verse transitive with the preposition of elevation, while in previous similar instances it was with the preposition of termination? I say: Because both meanings exist, for revelation descends from above and ends with the messengers. Sometimes it comes with one of the meanings and at other times with the other. Those who say that 'upon us' was said due to 'Say' and 'to us' due to 'Say' as a distinction between the messengers and the believers, because the messenger receives revelation in a manner of elevation, while it comes to them in a manner of termination, have strayed. Do you not see His saying: 'By what has been revealed to you,' and 'And We have revealed to you the Book,' and His saying: 'Believe in what has been revealed to those who have believed'? And we are Muslims for Him, monotheists, dedicating ourselves to Him, not associating partners with Him in worship. Then He said: 'And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam,' meaning monotheism and Islam as a way to Allah, 'it will not be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers,' meaning those who have fallen into loss absolutely, without restriction to the common. And it has been recited: 'And whoever seeks other than Islam' with the merging.
