Commentary
And indeed, among the People of the Book, according to Mujahid: it was revealed concerning Abdullah ibn Salam and others from the Muslims of the People of the Book. It was said: about forty from the people of Najran, and thirty-two from Abyssinia, and eight from the Romans who were on the religion of Jesus, peace be upon him, and they embraced Islam. It was said: concerning Ashama the Negus, the king of Abyssinia, and the meaning of Ashama is 'gift' in Arabic. This is because when he died, Gabriel announced his death to the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him. The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: 'Go out and pray for your brother who has died in a land other than yours.' So he went out to Al-Baqi' and looked towards the land of Abyssinia and saw the bed of the Negus and prayed for him and sought forgiveness for him. The hypocrites said: 'Look at this, he prays for a Christian who he has never seen and is not on his religion.' [This was mentioned by Al-Thalabi from the saying of Ibn Abbas and Qatadah. Its wording is: 'So he went out to Al-Baqi' and it was made apparent to him from the city to the land of Abyssinia, and he saw the bed of the Negus.' The rest is similar, and its chain was mentioned to them at the end of the book. Al-Wahidi mentioned it without a chain, and it was narrated by Al-Tabari and Ibn Adi in the biography of Abu Bakr Al-Hudhali, whose name is Salma, and he is weak - from Qatadah from Sa'id ibn Al-Musayyib from Jabir without his saying: 'And he looked towards the land of Abyssinia, and he saw the bed of the Negus,' and he added in it, 'and he said Takbir four times.' Al-Tabarani in Al-Awsat narrated it from the narration of Abdul Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam from his father from Ata' ibn Yasar from Abu Sa'id who said: 'When the news of the death of the Negus came to the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, he said: Go out and pray for your brother whom we have never seen. So we went out with him, and the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, advanced and we stood behind him, and he prayed and we prayed. When we finished, the hypocrites said: 'Look at this, he prays for a Christian whom he has never seen.' Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed: (And indeed, among the People of the Book).' Thus it was revealed. And the 'lam' of beginning entered upon the name of 'Indeed' to separate the circumstance between them, as in His saying: (And indeed, among you is one who will delay). And what has been revealed to you from the Qur'an and what has been revealed to them from the two Books, humbly submissive to Allah, is a state of the subject of 'believes,' because those who believe are in the meaning of the plural. They do not exchange the verses of Allah for a small price, as those who have not embraced Islam from their scholars and leaders do. Those are for them their reward with their Lord, meaning what is exclusive to them of the reward, which is what they were promised in His saying: (Those will be given their reward twice). (He will give you a double portion of His mercy). Indeed, Allah is swift in account for the execution of His work in everything. He is All-Knowing of what every worker deserves of reward. And it is possible that it is meant: indeed, what you are promised is near after mentioning the promise.
