Commentary
(Do not let) the address is to the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, or to anyone, meaning do not look at what they have of abundant provision and the turmoil and the attainment of worldly gains. Do not be deceived by the apparent ease you see in their spreading across the land and their dealings in trade and their indulgence. [The phrase 'and their dealings in trade and their indulgence' means they are filled and enjoy the softness of food and the goodness of drink. This was mentioned in the Sahih, in the material of 'dahq' and 'dahqan'. The more appropriate term in the Sahih is 'yadhamqun', where Al-Asma'i said: 'Dahmaq' means the softness of food and its goodness and tenderness. And the hadith of Umar: 'If I wished for it to be made soft for me, I would have done so, but Allah criticized a people saying: 'You have enjoyed your good things...' (the verse).' And 'dahqan' was not explicitly mentioned in this meaning.) And Ibn Abbas said: They are the people of Mecca. It was said: They are the Jews. It was narrated that some believers saw what they were in of abundance and ease and soft living and said: 'Indeed, the enemies of Allah are in what we see of goodness while we are perishing from hunger and hardship.' If you say: How could the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, be deceived by that to the extent that he warns against being deceived by it? I say: There are two aspects. One is that the leader of the people and their foremost is addressed with something, and his address stands in place of the address to them all, as if it were said: Do not let them deceive you. The second is that the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, was not deceived by their state, so he emphasized what he was upon and remained steadfast in his commitment, like his saying: (And do not be with the disbelievers), (And do not be among the polytheists), (So do not obey the deniers). This prohibition is similar to his command (Guide us to the straight path), (O you who have believed, believe). And the prohibition appears to be for the fluctuation, while in meaning it is for the addressee. This is because placing the cause in the position of the effect, for if the fluctuation had deceived him, he would have been deceived by it. Thus, the cause is prevented so that the effect may be prevented. And it was read: 'Do not let it deceive you' with a light 'nun'. 'A little enjoyment' is the news of a deleted subject, meaning that is a little enjoyment, which is the fluctuation in the land. He intended its little amount in comparison to what they have from the bliss of the Hereafter, or in comparison to what Allah has prepared for the believers of reward, or he meant that it is little in itself due to its end and everything transient is little. The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: 'What is this world in the Hereafter except like when one of you puts his finger in the sea, then let him see what it returns with.' [This was narrated by Muslim from the hadith of Al-Mustawrid ibn Shaddad.] And how bad is the resting place and evil is what they have prepared for themselves.
