Commentary
Do not think that the address is to the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him. And one of the objects is those who rejoice, and the second is (with a victory). And His saying, "So do not think that they are victorious," is an affirmation, its meaning being: do not think that they, so do not think that they are victorious. And it has been recited: "Do not think." "So do not think that they," with the letter 'ba' pronounced with a dammah, addressing the believers. And it has also been recited: "And let not them think." "So do not think that they," with the letter 'ya' and the letter 'ba' opened in both, indicating that the action is for the Messenger. And Abu Amr recited with the letter 'ya' and the letter 'ba' opened in the first and pronounced with a dammah in the second, indicating that the action is for those who rejoice, and the first object is omitted as: "Let not them think that those who rejoice with a victory," meaning: let not themselves think that those who rejoice are victorious, and "So do not think that they," is an affirmation. And the meaning of "with what they were given" is with what they did. And the words 'came' and 'brought' are used to mean 'did.' Allah, the Exalted, said: (Indeed, His promise is certainly coming), (Indeed, you have brought something astonishing). And this is supported by the reading of Ubayy: "They rejoice with what they did." And it has been recited: "They were given," meaning "they were granted." And from Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: "with what they were given." And the meaning of "with a victory from the punishment" is with safety from it. It has been narrated that the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, asked the Jews about something in the Torah, and they concealed the truth and informed him otherwise. It is agreed upon from the narration of Hamid ibn Abdul Rahman that Marwan said to his doorkeeper: "O Rafi', go to Ibn Abbas and tell him: If a man among us rejoices in what he has been given and praises for what he has not done, we will all be punished." Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, said: "This verse was revealed concerning the People of the Book. The Jews came to him, and the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, asked them about something, and they concealed it... the narration." And they showed him that they had confirmed him, and they praised him, and they rejoiced in what they did. So Allah informed His Messenger about that and comforted him with what was revealed of their warning: meaning: do not think that the Jews who rejoice in what they did - of their deception against you and love to be praised for what they did not do by telling you the truth about what you asked them - are safe from punishment. And the meaning of "they rejoice in what they brought" is with what they were given of the knowledge of the Torah. It is said that they rejoice in what they did of concealing the description of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and they love to be praised for what they did not do of following the religion of Ibrahim, as they claimed that Ibrahim was upon Judaism and that they are upon his religion. It is said that they are people who stayed behind from the expedition with the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and when he returned, they excused themselves to him by saying that they saw the benefit in staying behind, and they praised him for not going out. It is said that they are the hypocrites who rejoice in what they have done of showing faith to the Muslims and their hypocrisy, and they use that to achieve their goals, and they seek praise from them for the faith that they did not truly practice due to their concealment of disbelief. It is possible that it includes everyone who brings a good deed and rejoices in it with the joy of admiration, and loves that people praise him and commend him for piety and asceticism and for what is not in him.
