And do not think that the address is for the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, or for anyone else. It has been recited with the pronoun 'he' as: And let not the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, think, or let not the one who accounts think. It is permissible that those who were killed are the subject, and the meaning is: And let not those who killed themselves think they are dead. If you say: How is it permissible to omit the first object? I say: It is originally a subject, so it was omitted just as the subject was omitted in the saying 'alive,' and the meaning is: They are alive, as indicated by the speech regarding them. And it has been recited: And do not think with the opening of the 's', and 'killed' with emphasis. And 'alive' in the accusative meaning: Rather, consider them alive with their Lord, near to Him, having high status, as in His saying: (So those who are with your Lord). They are provided for like other living beings, eating and drinking. This is an affirmation of their being alive and a description of their state in enjoying Allah's provision, rejoicing in what Allah has given them of His bounty, which is success in martyrdom and what He has granted them of honor and preference over others, being alive and near, with their provision of Paradise and its delights hastened for them. And from the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, "When your brothers were struck at Uhud, Allah placed their souls in the bodies of green birds that roam in the rivers of Paradise, eating from its fruits and seeking refuge in lanterns of gold hanging in the shade of the Throne." [Narrated by Abu Dawood, Ibn Abi Shaiba, Al-Hakim, Abu Ya'la, and Al-Bazzar, all from the narration of Ibn Abbas with this and more.] Al-Daraqutni said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq alone narrated it from Ismail ibn Umayyah, and its origin is in Muslim from the narration of Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, with the wording: "Their souls are in the bodies of green birds with lanterns hanging by the Throne, frolicking in Paradise wherever they wish - the hadith." And they rejoice) in their brothers, the fighters, about those who did not catch up with them, meaning those who were not killed to catch up with them from behind them, referring to those who remained after them while they had preceded them. It was said: They did not catch up with them; they did not attain their virtue and status. There is no fear upon them, a replacement for those. The meaning is: And they rejoice in what has become clear to them about the state of those they left behind among the believers, which is that they will be resurrected safe on the Day of Resurrection. Allah has given them glad tidings of that, so they are rejoicing in it. In mentioning the state of the martyrs and their rejoicing for those behind them, there is encouragement for those who remain after them to increase in obedience, diligence in jihad, and desire to attain the ranks of the martyrs and receive their virtue, and a commendation for one who sees himself in goodness and wishes the same for his brothers in Allah, and glad tidings for the believers of victory in the Hereafter. And He repeated 'they rejoice' to connect it with what clarifies His saying: (There is no fear upon them and they will not grieve) from mentioning the blessing and virtue, and that this is a reward for them due to their faith, which must, in Allah's justice and wisdom, be granted to them and not be wasted. And it has been recited (And that Allah) with the opening as a conjunction to the blessing and virtue. And with the closing as a beginning and that the sentence is an interruption, and this is the reading of Al-Kisai. It is supported by the reading of Abdullah. And Allah does not waste.
