This is a clarification for the people, an explanation of the evil consequences of what they are upon of denial. It means: urging them to reflect on the evil outcomes of the deniers before them and to take heed of what they witness of the effects of their destruction. And it is guidance and an admonition for the pious. It means that while it is a clarification and a warning for the deniers, it is also an additional reassurance and admonition for those who are pious among the believers. It is permissible that the saying: (Indeed, there have passed) is an interjection to motivate belief and what is deserved by what has been mentioned of the reward for the doers. And the saying: (This is a clarification) refers to what has been summarized and clarified regarding the affairs of the pious, the repentant, and the persistent wrongdoers. And do not weaken and do not grieve is a consolation from Allah, glorified and exalted is He, for His Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, and for the believers regarding what befell them on the Day of Uhud and a strengthening of their hearts. It means do not weaken in the struggle due to what has befallen you, that is, do not let that lead you to despair. And do not be concerned about it, nor grieve for those who were killed or wounded among you. And you are the uppermost, and your condition is that you are higher than them and more dominant, because you inflicted upon them on the Day of Badr more than they inflicted upon you on the Day of Uhud. Or you are the uppermost in rank, because your fighting is for Allah and to elevate His word, while their fighting is for the devil to elevate the word of disbelief. And because your slain are in Paradise and their slain are in the Fire. Or it is a glad tidings for them of superiority and dominance, that is, and you are the uppermost in the outcome. Indeed, Our soldiers are the victorious. If you are believers is related to the prohibition, meaning: and do not weaken if your faith is sound, on the basis that sound faith necessitates strength of heart and confidence in the actions of Allah and little concern for His enemies. Or it relates to the uppermost, meaning if you are affirming what Allah has promised you and gives you glad tidings of victory.
