Commentary
When the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, commanded those who embraced Islam in Mecca to migrate, they feared poverty and loss. One of them would say: How can I go to a place where I have no means of living? Then this verse was revealed. And the creature: every soul that moves on the face of the earth, whether it understands or does not understand. It carries its provision, but it cannot bear it due to its weakness in carrying it. Allah provides for it and for you, meaning that He does not provide for those weak creatures except Allah, nor does He provide for you, O strong ones, except Him, even if you are capable of carrying your provisions and earning them. Because if He did not enable you and did not decree for you the means of earning, you would be weaker than the creatures that do not carry. And according to Al-Hasan, 'It does not carry its provision, nor does it store it; it simply wakes up and Allah provides for it.' And according to Ibn Uyaynah: There is nothing that is hidden except for man, the ant, and the mouse. And some of them said: I saw the nightingale hoarding in its lap. It is said that the jackdaw has hiding places, but it forgets them. And He is the All-Hearing of your saying: We fear poverty and loss, the All-Knowing of what is in your hearts.
