The meaning of the verse is that if a believer does not find it easy to worship in the land he is in, and his religious affairs do not proceed as he wishes, then he should migrate to a land where he believes his heart will be more at peace, his religion will be healthier, his worship will be greater, and his humility will be better. Truly, the lands differ greatly in this regard. We have experienced this, and our predecessors have experienced it, and we have not found, in what we have traversed and what they traversed, anything more helpful in overcoming the self and resisting desires, more unifying for the distracted heart, more consolidating for the widespread worries, more encouraging for contentment, more repelling of the devil, further away from many temptations, and more regulating of religious matters in general than residing in the Sacred Sanctuary of Allah and in the vicinity of the House of Allah. So, all praise is due to Allah for what He has made easy and brought near, and for granting patience and inspiring gratitude. And from the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, 'Whoever flees with his religion from one land to another, even if it is just a span of land, will earn Paradise and will be a companion of Ibrahim and Muhammad.' It is said that this refers to the oppressed ones in Mecca, concerning whom the verse was revealed: 'Was not the earth of Allah vast enough for you to migrate therein?' This was because their religious affairs could not be established among the disbelievers. 'So, worship Me.' In the speaker's case, it is like: 'I struck him,' in the third person: 'I bit you,' in the second person. The meaning is: 'So worship Me.' If you ask: What is the meaning of the 'fa' in 'fa'budoon'? I say: The 'fa' is a response to an omitted condition, because the meaning is: 'If My earth is vast, then if you do not dedicate worship to Me in one land, dedicate it to Me in another.' Then the condition was omitted, and the object was advanced in compensation for its omission, with the advancement providing the meaning of specificity and sincerity.
