Commentary
It was recited: a verse, and verses. They wanted: Why has a sign not been sent down to him like the she-camel of Salih and the table of Jesus, peace be upon them, and similar things? The signs are only with Allah; He sends down whichever He wills. If He had willed to send down what you propose, He would have done so. And I am only a warner, tasked with warning and clarifying what I have been given of the signs. It is not for me to choose from among Allah's signs and say, 'Send down to me this sign instead of that sign,' knowing that the purpose of the sign is to establish proof. All the signs are like one sign in that regard. Then He said: Is it not enough for them that a sign has come to them that is sufficient over all other signs—if they are seeking the truth and not being obstinate? This Qur'an, which is continuously recited to them in every place and time, remains with them as a steadfast sign that does not fade or diminish, just as every sign fades after its existence, and is in one place and not in another. Indeed, in such a sign that exists in every place and time until the end of time is a mercy for a great blessing that is not thanked. And a reminder for a people who believe. It was said: Is it not enough for them, meaning the Jews, that We have sent down to you the Book that is recited to them, confirming what is in their hands of your description and the description of your religion? It was said that some Muslims came to the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, with a shoulder bone on which they had written some of what the Jews said. When he looked at it, he threw it away and said: It is enough of a foolishness of a people or a misguidance of a people to desire what their Prophet has brought them to what has been brought by someone who is not their Prophet. Then it was revealed. [Reported by al-Tabari and Abu Dawood in the mursal from the path of Yahya ibn Ja'dah: 'that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, was approached by a group of Muslims with a book on a shoulder bone,' and he mentioned something similar, and the wording of al-Tabari is like the original.] The correct interpretation is what we have mentioned: 'Sufficient is Allah as a witness between me and you that I have conveyed to you what I was sent with and have warned you, and that you have responded to me with denial and rejection. He knows what is in the heavens and the earth; He is aware of my affair and your affair, and knows your truth and falsehood. And those who have believed in falsehood among you, which is what you worship besides Allah, and have disbelieved in Allah and His signs, they are the losers, deceived in their transaction where they have exchanged disbelief for faith. However, the speech was in the context of fairness, as in His saying: 'And indeed, we or you are on guidance or in clear error,' and the saying of Hassan: 'So evil as good as the ransom.' It has been narrated that Ka'b ibn al-Ashraf and his companions said: O Muhammad, who witnesses for you that you are the Messenger of Allah? Then it was revealed.
