Commentary
Meeting Allah: It is an example of reaching the outcome. It is from the moment one encounters the Angel of Death, the resurrection, the reckoning, and the recompense. This state is likened to a servant who comes to his master after a long absence. His master has seen what he has done and what he has neglected. So, he may meet him with joy and welcome for the good deeds he has done, or with the opposite for the deeds he has disapproved of. The meaning of his saying, 'Whoever hopes for the meeting with Allah': it refers to one who hopes for that state. And to meet therein with honor from Allah and glad tidings. Indeed, the decree of Allah, which is death, is certainly coming. So let him hasten to perform righteous deeds that affirm his hope, realize his aspiration, and earn closeness to Allah and nearness. And He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, who is not unaware of anything that His servants say or do. He is deserving of piety and fear. It has been said that 'hopes' means to fear, based on the words of Al-Hudhali regarding the description of 'Asal: 'If the wasp stings him, he does not hope for its sting.' This refers to a description of 'Asal gathering honey: that if the wasp stings him, he does not hope for its sting. Or if he has been stung, he does not fear a similar sting, or he does not anticipate it and take care of it, and he is associated with it, meaning he remains with it. It is also narrated with the 'm' indicating opposition to its intention. Or he came behind it after it went out to graze. The 'Nawab' is a type of bee, its singular is 'Nawab,' because it goes to its home in shifts after shifts. 'Awasil' means abundant in honey. It is also narrated: 'A'amal,' with the 'm' because it produces honey. If you say: 'The decree of Allah is coming,' how does it serve as an answer to the condition? I say: If it is known that the meeting with Allah refers to that depicted state and the time in which that state occurs is the appointed time of death, it is as if he said: 'Whoever hopes for the meeting with Allah, then the meeting with Allah is coming,' because the appointed time is when the meeting occurs, just as you would say: 'Whoever hopes for the meeting with the king, then Friday is near,' if it is known that he sits for the people on Friday.
