Commentary
And the like of this revelation is: 'We have sent down to you the Book,' meaning: We have sent it down confirming the other heavenly books, fulfilling His saying: 'We believe in what has been sent down to us and what has been sent down to you.' It is said: Just as We sent down the books to those before you, We have sent down to you the Book. So those to whom We have given the Book are Abdullah ibn Salam and those who believed with him, and among these are some from the people of Mecca. It is also said that by those who were given the Book, he meant those who preceded the time of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, from the people of the Book, and among these are some who were in his time. And none deny Our signs with their clarity and the removal of doubt from them except those deeply entrenched in disbelief, resolute in it. It is said that they are Ka'b ibn al-Ashraf and his companions.
