Commentary
The connection confirms the existence of the two actions, one following the other in adjacent times with no interval between them, as if they occurred in one part of time. It is as if it were said: just as he felt their coming, the evening surprised him without delay, out of fear for them from his people. And he was overwhelmed by them and was distressed regarding them and their affairs, meaning his capacity. The Arabs have made the phrase 'narrow of arm' and 'narrow of capacity' a metaphor for lack of ability, just as they said: 'wide of arm' regarding something if he is capable of it. The origin of this is that when a man's arm is long, he attains what the short-armed cannot reach, so this became a metaphor for inability and ability.
