Commentary
Ibrahim is mentioned with an implied 'mention,' and it is replaced with 'when' as a substitute for inclusion, because the times include what is in them. Or it is connected to 'Nuh,' and 'when' is an adverb for 'We sent.' This means: We sent him when he reached an age and knowledge that was suitable for him to admonish his people, advise them, present to them the truth, and command them to worship and be pious. Ibrahim was read by Al-Nakha'i and Abu Hanifa, may Allah have mercy on them. And 'Ibrahim' is in the nominative, meaning: 'And among the messengers is Ibrahim.' 'If you know' means: If there is knowledge among you of what is better for you than what is worse for you. Or if you look with the eye of insight rather than the blind eye of ignorance: you would know that it is better for you. And it was read: 'You create from creation,' meaning an abundance in creation. And 'you create' is from 'to create' meaning to lie and fabricate. And it was read: 'A falsehood,' with two possibilities: that it is a noun, like 'lie' and 'play.' The falsehood is a lighter form of it, like lying and playing from their origins. And it could be an adjective in the form of a verb, meaning 'a creation of falsehood,' that is, one with falsehood and deceit. Their fabrication of falsehood is their naming of idols as deities and partners to Allah or intercessors to Him. Or the idols are called falsehood, and their actions towards them and their carving of them are a creation of falsehood. If you say: Why was the provision mentioned in an indefinite form and then defined? I say: Because he intended that they are not able to provide you with anything from provision, so seek provision from Allah entirely. For He is the Provider alone and does not provide for others. 'To Him you will return.' And it was read: with the 't' opened, so prepare for meeting Him by worshiping Him and thanking Him for His blessings. And if you deny me, you will not harm me with your denial, for the messengers before me were denied by their nations, and they did not harm them but harmed themselves, as what befell them was due to their denial of the messengers. As for the messenger, his matter was completed when he delivered the clear message that removed doubt, which is his association with the signs of Allah and His miracles. Or: If I am denied among you, then I have in the other prophets an example and solace, as they were denied. And it is upon the messenger to convey, and it is not upon him to believe or deny. This verse and the verses that follow it up to the saying 'What was the response of his people' are likely to be part of Ibrahim's words, peace be upon him, to his people, and they may be verses that are interjected concerning the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and concerning Quraysh between the beginning of Ibrahim's story and its end. If you say: If it is from Ibrahim's words, what is meant by the nations before him? I say: The people of Sheeth, Idris, Nuh, and others. And enough is the people of Nuh as a nation in the meaning of numerous nations that denied. And indeed, Idris lived a thousand years among his people until he was raised to the heavens. And a thousand people believed in him, corresponding to the number of his years, and their descendants denied.
