That is a glorification of it and an exaltation of its status. It means: that which you have heard mentioned and its description has reached you. The warning is not attached to abandoning arrogance and corruption, but to abandoning the intention of them and the inclination of the hearts towards them, as He said: 'And do not incline toward those who have wronged.' So the warning is attached to inclining. And from Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: A man likes that the strap of his sandal is better than the strap of his companion's sandal, and he falls under it.

It was narrated by Al-Tabari and Al-Wahidi from the narration of Waki' from Ash'ath Al-Samman from Abu Salamah Al-A'raj from Ali with this being stopped, and its chain is weak. And from Al-Fudail, he recited it and then said: 'The hopes have gone here.'

Mahamud said: 'The promise is not attached to abandoning arrogance and corruption but to abandoning the intention of them, as Allah, the Exalted, said: 'And do not incline toward those who have wronged, lest the Fire touches you.' So the warning is attached to inclining towards the wrongdoers. And from Ali, that a man likes that the strap of his sandal is better than the strap of his brother's sandal, and he falls under it. And from Umar ibn Abdul Aziz, he used to repeat it until he passed away. And from Al-Fudail, he recited it and said: 'The hopes have gone here.'

And among the greedy are those who attribute arrogance to Pharaoh and corruption to Qarun, referring to His saying: 'Indeed, Pharaoh exalted himself in the land,' and His saying: 'And do not seek corruption in the land.' They say: 'Whoever is not like Pharaoh and Qarun will have that abode in the Hereafter,' and they do not contemplate His saying: 'And the end is for the righteous,' as Ali, Al-Fudail, and Umar contemplated it.
