Commentary
Did you see? It is also read as 'Ariytum' by omitting the hamzah, and this is not a standard omission. Its meaning is: inform me who is capable of this? And 'as-sarmad' means the everlasting and continuous, from 'as-sard' which is to follow continuously. Hence, they say regarding the sacred months: three are continuous and one is solitary, and the 'm' is an addition. Its weight is 'fa'ala'. And its counterpart is 'dalams', from 'dalas'. If you say: Why was it not said: 'by day you act in it', as it was said: 'by night you dwell in it'? I say: The light is mentioned, which is the light of the sun, because the benefits that relate to it are numerous. It is not just about acting for livelihood, and darkness does not hold that status. Therefore, it is coupled with light: 'Do you not hear?' because hearing perceives what sight does not perceive from the mention of its benefits and the description of its advantages. And it is coupled with night: 'Do you not see?' because others see from the benefit of darkness what you see. And you are in stillness and the like. And from His mercy, He alternated between night and day for three purposes: to provide you with rest in one of them, which is the night, to seek the bounty of Allah in the other, which is the day, and to intend your gratitude.
