Commentary
This verse is a confirmation and clarification of the one before it. The good promise is the reward, because it is lasting benefits in a manner of honor and deservingness. And what could be better than it? Therefore, Allah named Paradise as the good. And as for His saying, 'And He will meet them with beauty and joy,' the opposite of it is 'So they will meet with a terrible fate.' Among those who are brought forth are those who have been brought to the Fire. And similar to it is 'If I were among those who are brought forth.' They denied him, for indeed they will be brought forth. It is said: This was revealed about the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and Abu Jahl. It is said: About Ali, Hamza, and Abu Jahl. It is said: About Ammar ibn Yasir and Al-Walid ibn Al-Mughirah. If you say: Explain to me the two 'fa's and 'thumma,' and inform me about their locations. I say: The previous verse mentioned the enjoyment of the worldly life and what is with Allah and their differences. Then it was followed by His saying, 'Is he whom We promised?' meaning: After this apparent difference, will He equal between the people of the Hereafter and the people of this world? This is the meaning of the first 'fa' and an explanation of its location. As for the second, it is for causation, because the meeting of the promised is a result of the promise, which is the guarantee of good. As for 'thumma,' it is for the delay of the state of being brought forth from the state of enjoyment, not for the delay of its time from its time. And it has been read 'thumma huwa' with the 'ha' being silent, as it was said 'a'ud in 'a'ud,' likening the separated to the connected. And the silence of the 'ha' in: 'fa huwa,' 'wa huwa,' and 'la huwa' is better because a single letter is not pronounced alone; it is like the connected.
