Commentary

You cannot guide whom you love. You cannot make every person you wish to enter Islam from your people or others enter it, because you are a servant who does not know what is inscribed on the heart of another. But Allah admits into Islam whom He wills, and He knows that he is not inscribed on his heart, and that the divine graces benefit him. So He combines with him His graces until they call him to acceptance. And He knows best the guided ones, those who are receptive from those who do not accept. Al-Zajjaj said: The Muslims unanimously agree that this was revealed about Abu Talib. This is because Abu Talib said at the time of his death: O people of Banu Hashim, obey Muhammad and believe in him, you will succeed and be guided. The Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: You advise them for their own benefit and leave it for yourself? He said: What do you want, O son of my brother? He said: I want from you one word, for you are on the last day of your life: to say there is no god but Allah, I bear witness to you with it before Allah. He said: O son of my brother, you know that you are truthful, but I dislike to be said: He faltered at death. And if it were not that there would be disgrace upon you and your family after me, I would have said it, and your heart would have been at ease at parting, due to what I see of your intense longing and your advice. But I will die upon the religion of the elders, Abdul Muttalib, Hashim, and Abdul Manaf.
