So when the truth came to them, which is the Messenger confirming the miraculous Book along with other miracles, their excuses were cut off and the way for their argument was blocked. They said, 'Why was he not given like what was given to Moses from the revealed Book in one go, and from the splitting of the sea and other signs?' They came with proposals based on obstinacy and stubbornness, as they said: 'If only a treasure had been sent down to him or an angel had come with him,' and similar things. Did they not disbelieve, meaning their kind and those of their sect, and their stubbornness was like the stubbornness of the disbelievers in the time of Moses, may peace be upon him, regarding what was given to Moses? And according to Al-Hasan, may Allah have mercy on him, the Arabs had a root in the days of Moses, so its meaning in this context is: Did their forefathers not disbelieve? They said about Moses and Aaron, 'They are two magicians who have supported each other.' It was also read as 'two magicians' with assimilation. And 'two magicians' means: possessing magic, or they made them two magicians as an exaggeration in describing them with magic, or they intended two types of magic, each one of them.

If you say: What did you connect his saying before in this interpretation? I say: With 'And did they not disbelieve,' and I could connect it with 'given,' so the meaning would turn to the people of Mecca who said this statement, just as they disbelieved in Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, and the Qur'an, they disbelieved in Moses, may peace be upon him, and the Torah. And they said about Moses and Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon them: 'Two magicians who have supported each other.' Or in the two Books: 'Two magicians who have supported each other,' and that was when they sent a group to the leaders of the Jews in Medina to ask them about Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him. They informed them of his description and that he was in their Book. The group returned to Quraysh and informed them of the Jews' words, and at that point, they said: 'Two magicians who have supported each other.'
