Commentary
If you say: How is his saying وَلكِنَّا أَنْشَأْنا قُرُوناً connected to this speech? And from which aspect is it an addition to it? I say: Its connection to it and being an addition to it is from the perspective that its meaning is: But We created many generations after the period of revelation until your time, and the last of them extended: it is the generation in which you are. The duration is the time of the cessation of revelation and the disappearance of knowledge, so it was necessary to send you to them. So We sent you and made you [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN:kasibna] knowledge with the stories of the prophets and the story of Moses, peace be upon him, as if He said: And you were not a witness to Moses and what happened to him, but We revealed to you. So He mentioned the reason for the revelation, which is the lengthening of the period, and indicated the consequence in accordance with Allah, glorified and exalted is He, in His brevity. Thus, this addition is similar to the two additions that follow it وَما كُنْتَ ثاوِياً in the people of Midian, and they are Shu'ayb and the believers with him, تَتْلُوا عَلَيْهِمْ آياتِنا reading to them Our verses, learning from them. He means: the verses that contain the story of Shu'ayb and his people, but We sent you and informed you of them and taught you them.
