Commentary
So they are driven, their first ones are held back until they gather and are thrown into the Fire. This phrase indicates a large number and the distance between its ends, as the soldiers of Solomon were described in this way. Likewise, His saying 'fawjan' means a large group. From it is His saying, 'They enter into the religion of Allah in groups.' And regarding Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, Abu Jahl, Al-Walid ibn Al-Mughira, and Shaybah ibn Rabi'ah are driven before the people of Mecca. Likewise, the leaders of all other nations are gathered before them to the Fire. If you say: What is the difference between the first and the second? I say: The first is for partitive, and the second is for clarification, like His saying 'min al-awthan'.
