Necessity: the state that requires resorting. And duress: a derivation from it. It is said: he was compelled to such and such.

The doer and the object: compelled. The compelled one is the one whom illness, poverty, or a calamity of time has made resort to and supplicate to Allah. And from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him: it is the one who is exhausted. And from Al-Suddi: the one who has no strength or power. It is said: the sinner when he seeks forgiveness.

If you say: the statement "He answers the one who is compelled when he calls upon Him" encompasses all the compelled, and how many compelled ones call upon Him but are not answered?

I say, the response is contingent upon the supplication being beneficial. Therefore, it is not appropriate for the servant to call upon Him except by stipulating the benefit. As for the compelled, it encompasses the category in general, it is suitable for all of it and for some of it. There is no way to be certain about either one except with evidence. And the evidence has been established for some, which is the one whose benefit answered him, thus the general application is invalid.

The successors of the earth are its successors in it, and that is their inheritance of its dwelling and their management of it from generation to generation. Or he meant by succession kingship and authority. And it was recited: "they remember" with the pronoun and with the merging. And with the pronoun and with the merging and omission. And "what" is an addition, meaning: they remember with little remembrance. And the meaning is: negation of remembrance, and the little is used in the sense of negation.
