56So, the answer of his people was not else but that they said, “Expel the family of LūT from your town. They are a people who over-indulge in purity.” 57So, We saved him and his family, except his wife. We destined her to remain among those who stayed behind. 58And We rained on them a rain. So evil was the rain of those who were warned.

Commentary
And Al-A'mash read: 'the response of his people' with a raised ending. The well-known reading is better: 'they purify themselves' meaning they distance themselves from all impurities, and their denial of this filthy act angers us. And from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, it is mockery. We have estimated it as being among the doomed, like His saying: 'We have estimated that it is indeed among the doomed.' Thus, the estimation is based on the meaning of being doomed.
