The waw in وَاسْتَيْقَنَتْها is the waw of الحال, and what follows it is implied. Al-‘uluww means arrogance and elevation above the faith in what Moses brought, as His saying goes: 'So they were arrogant and were a people of high status.' They said, 'Should we believe in two humans like us while their people are our worshippers?' It has been recited as 'aliya' and 'aliyya' with both the damma and the kasra, just as it has been recited as 'atiyya' and 'atiyya.' The benefit of mentioning the souls is that they denied them with their tongues, while they were certain of them in their hearts and consciences. Al-istiyqan is more profound than al-iqān. There is a comparison made between the sighted and the clear. And what greater injustice is there than the injustice of one who believed and was certain that these are clear signs that came from Allah, then he opposed it by calling it clear magic, evident and without doubt.
