Commentary
The illuminating: the clear and evident. The sight is made for it, while in reality it is for those who reflect upon it, because they are clothed in it and were, because of it, looking and thinking about it. It may be intended by the reality of sight: every observer in it from all those of reason, and it may be intended the sight of Pharaoh and his elite, due to His saying: 'And their souls were certain of it.' Or it is made as if it sees and is guided, because blindness cannot achieve guidance, let alone guide others. From it is their saying: a clear word, and a blind word, because the good word guides, while the bad one leads astray. Similar to His saying, the Exalted: 'Indeed, you knew what these had not sent down except the Lord of the heavens and the earth, insights.' So He described it with illumination, just as He described it with sight. And Ali ibn Al-Husayn, may Allah be pleased with them, and Qatadah read: illuminating, which is similar to: cowardly, stingy, and severing, meaning: a place where reflection is abundant.
