Commentary
And from Mujahid: He named them treasures because they did not spend from them in obedience to Allah. And the مقام (maqam): the place, he means: the good abodes and the splendid gatherings. And from Al-Duhak: the pulpits. And it is said that the secret is in the حجال (hujal) [The term 'hujal' refers to the gathering place of the bride, adorned with clothes, beds, and curtains, as stated in the dictionaries.] Likewise, it has three interpretations: the accusative as in 'We brought them out in such a manner as described.' The genitive as a description of the مقام (maqam), meaning: a noble مقام (maqam) like that مقام (maqam) which they had. And the nominative as a subject of an omitted predicate, meaning: the matter is so. So they followed them. And it was read: 'So they followed them مُشْرِقِينَ (mushriqeen)' entering at the time of sunrise, from شَرَقَت (sharqat) the sun when it rose.
