They swore by the might of Pharaoh, and this is from the oaths of ignorance. Thus, every oath taken by other than Allah is like this. In Islam, only an oath by Allah is valid, and it must be linked to some of His names or attributes, such as saying: 'By Allah,' 'By the Most Merciful,' 'By my Lord,' 'By the Lord of the Throne,' 'By the Might of Allah,' 'By the Power of Allah,' 'By the Majesty of Allah,' and 'By the Greatness of Allah.' The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: 'Do not swear by your fathers, nor by your mothers, nor by false gods, and do not swear except by Allah, and do not swear by Allah except while you are truthful.' [Narrated by an-Nasa'i from the hadith of Abu Huraira without the phrase 'and do not swear except by Allah.' He said 'by rivals' instead of 'false gods.' It is also narrated from the hadith of Abdur-Rahman ibn Samurah: 'Do not swear by your fathers, nor by false gods.' This is a summary. In the two Sahihs, it is narrated from Ibn Umar that he said: 'Whoever is swearing, let him not swear except by Allah.' Indeed, people have innovated in this matter in their Islam, a form of ignorance that the first ignorance has forgotten. This is because if one of them swears by all the names of Allah and His attributes about something, it will not be accepted from him, nor will it be considered valid until he swears by the head of his authority. If he swears by it, then that is for them the utmost of oaths, beyond which there is no oath for the one swearing.
