Commentary
Al-Bakh' means to reach the point of slaughter, with the letter 'ba', and it is a vein that is deep within the vertebrae. This is the utmost limit of slaughter. Perhaps it is out of compassion, meaning: have compassion for yourself that you kill it out of regret for what has passed you by of the Islam of your people, that they may not be believers, or due to their refusal to believe, or out of fear that they will not believe. And from Qatadah, may Allah be pleased with him: 'Bakh' yourself in addition.
