Commentary
The companions of the Thicket are read with a hamzah and with its lightening, and with the genitive case as an addition, which is the preferred way. And whoever read it in the accusative and claimed that Thicket is like the word 'night' in weight: a name of a place, has been misled by the script of the mushaf, where it is found written in this surah and in Surah Sad without an alif. In the mushaf, there are things written contrary to the established rules of writing, and they were written in these two surahs according to the pronunciation of the speaker, just as grammarians write 'lan' and 'lawla' in this form to indicate the pronunciation of the lightened form, while it is written in the rest of the Qur'an according to the original rule. The story is one, noting that Thicket is a name that is not known. It has been narrated that the companions of the Thicket were the people of a twisted tree, and their tree was the doum. If you say: Why was it not said: 'Their brother was Shu'ayb,' as in other places? I say: They said that Shu'ayb was not from the companions of the Thicket. In the hadith, it is mentioned that Shu'ayb was the brother of Midian, sent to them and to the companions of the Thicket.
