Commentary
If you do not stop from our prohibition and the ugliness of our matter, you will certainly be among those whom we have expelled from among us and driven out of our land. And perhaps they were expelling those whom they expelled in the worst condition: with abuse towards him and detention of his possessions. [Mahmoud said: "That is, among those whom we have expelled, and perhaps they were expelling those whom they expelled in the worst condition of abuse towards him and detention of his possessions and similar things." Ahmad said: "It has often been mentioned in the Qur'an, especially in this context, the shift from expressing with a verb to expressing with a derived adjective, and then making the described one among a group, like Pharaoh's saying, 'I will certainly make you among the imprisoned,' and their saying, 'It is the same for us whether you admonish or do not admonish from among the admonishers,' and their saying, 'You will certainly be among the stoned,' and His saying, 'Indeed, I am of your deeds among the disapproving,' and His saying in other contexts, 'They were pleased to be with the left behind,' and likewise, 'Let us be with those who sit.' And many similar examples. The secret in that, and Allah knows best, is that expressing with a verb only conveys the occurrence specifically, while expressing with an adjective and then making the described one among a group conveys an additional matter beyond its occurrence, which is that the mentioned adjective is like a characteristic of the described one, as if it is a title, and as if he is from a group that has become like a specific type known for some bad characteristics. Consider this: if I said, 'They were pleased to lag behind,' there would be no additional meaning beyond informing of their lagging behind. And look at the context, which is His saying, 'They were pleased to be with the left behind,' how He attached to them a bad title and made them from a despicable group known for the characteristic of lagging behind, until it became a title that sticks to them. This answer is general for everything that comes to you of similar matters, so contemplate it and appreciate its worth, and Allah is the one who grants success to what is right."] And as is the case with the oppressors when they delay some of those whom they are angry with, and as the people of Mecca used to do with those who wanted to migrate.
