Commentary
It is narrated that Mus'ta forced her into a narrow passage in a valley, then he shot her with an arrow and hit her leg, so she fell. Then Qadar struck her. It is also narrated that the one who killed her said: 'I will not kill her until you all agree.' So they would enter upon the woman in her chamber and say: 'Are you pleased?' She would say: 'Yes,' as would their children. If you say: 'Why did they receive punishment when they regretted?' I say: 'Their regret was not the regret of the repentant, but the regret of those who feared they would be punished for the killing with an immediate punishment, like one who sees a corrupt opinion in some matters and builds upon it, then regrets and laments like the regret of Al-Kas'ei. Or they regretted as repentant ones but at a time other than the time of repentance, and that was when they witnessed the punishment. And Allah, the Exalted, said: 'And repentance is not for those who commit evil deeds...' The verse. It is said that their regret was for not having offspring, which is unlikely. The 'lam' in 'the punishment' indicates the punishment of a great day.
