Commentary
It was recited: with every ri' (بكل ريع), with both the kasra and the fatha: it is the elevated place. Al-Musayyib ibn 'Aylas said: in the alal it raises and lowers it... A ri' appears as if it is a sahl. [For Al-Musayyib ibn 'Aylas, the alal is the mirage. It was said: the alal is what is at the ends of the day and what is in the middle of it, the mirage.
And the ri' with the kasra: the road and the elevated part of the land. And the sahl: a type of white clothing from Yemen, and perhaps the pronoun refers to the women, meaning: they are in the alal. Or at its time: by raising it at times and lowering it at others, a ri' means an elevated road at times and a lowered one at others.
Or a high place that rises by ascending it and lowers by descending from it, appears: meaning it shows from afar, as if it were white garments.]
And from this is their saying: how high is your land? It is its elevation. And the verse: knowledge, and they were among those who were guided by the stars in their travels. So they took tall signs in their paths and played with that, for they were independent of it by the stars.
And from Mujahid: they built with every ri' towers of pigeons. [Mawlid said: "They were guided in their travels by the stars, so they took signs in their paths and played with that, as the stars were sufficient for them. And it was said: the intended meaning is the erected palaces, and it was said: towers of pigeons." Ahmad said: and the interpretation of it as palaces is more apparent, and it has been reported that this was condemned by our Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, when he described the beings of the last times as those who would be extravagant in building. And how good is the saying of Malik, may Allah be pleased with him: the imam should not pray on something higher than what his companions are on, like the platforms that are significantly elevated in the prayer niche, because they play around, so he expressed their elevation to the prayer niche as a form of arrogance and their towering over the followers as playing around, like the expression of Hud, peace be upon him, about the arrogance of his people in building as playing around. As for the interpretation of the verse regarding their taking signs in the roads while they had sufficient guidance from the stars, it is far-fetched, as the need calls for that due to a thick cloud and what runs its course.
If this were placed in our time today for this purpose, it would not be playing around, and Allah knows best.] And the factories: the sources of water. And it was said: the erected palaces and fortresses. 'Perhaps you seek to live forever' you hope for eternity in this world. Or your condition resembles that of one who lives forever. And in the reading of Ubayy: as if you are. And it was recited 'takhloodoon' with the letter 'ta' being pronounced either lightly or heavily. 'And when you strike with a whip or sword, that is oppression and tyranny,' and it was said: the tyrant who kills and strikes in anger. And from Al-Hasan: you hasten the punishment, you do not pause to reflect on the consequences.
