Commentary
This is not a statement of denial, for he knows that the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed is more knowledgeable. However, he wanted to say that I do not call upon You against them for what they have caused me distress and harmed me. Rather, I call upon You for Your sake and for the sake of Your religion, and because they have denied me in Your revelation and Your message. So judge between me and them. And the term 'al-fattāḥa' refers to governance. And 'al-fattāḥ' is the judge, for he opens what is closed, as it is named 'al-faisal' because it separates between disputes. 'Al-falak' means the ship, and its plural is 'aflāk.' Allah, the Most High, said: 'And you see the ships in it [the sea] as [they] glide.' The singular is in the form of 'qafl,' and the plural is in the form of 'asad.' They broke the form 'fa'ala' into 'fa'al' just as they broke 'fa'ala' into 'fa'al,' because they are brothers in your saying: 'the Arabs' and 'the Arabs,' and 'the guidance' and 'the guidance.' They said: 'asad' and 'asad,' and 'falak' and 'falak.' An example of this is 'bīr hajjān' and 'ibl hajjān.' And 'dir' dālās' and 'durū' dālās.' The singular is in the form of 'kunāz,' and the plural is in the form of 'karām.' 'Al-mashḥūn' means filled. It is said: 'He filled it with horses and men against them.'
