Commentary
The intended meaning is that they will be rewarded with the chambers, which are the lofty places in Paradise. The singular form is used to indicate the category. The evidence for this is His saying, "And they are in the chambers, safe." And the reading of those who recite: "in the chamber" is due to their patience in obedience, against desires, and against the harm of the disbelievers and their struggle, as well as in poverty and other matters.
And its use is due to the generality in everything that is endured. And it has been recited: "they will be met," as in His saying, "And He will meet them with beauty and joy," and "they will be met," as in His saying, "He will meet with punishment." The greeting is a prayer for longevity. And the peace is a prayer for safety, meaning that the angels greet them and offer them peace. Or they greet one another and offer peace, or they grant permanence and immortality with safety from every affliction. O Allah, grant us success in obeying You, and make us among the people of Your mercy, and provide us with what You provide them in the abode of Your pleasure.
