Commentary
It is possible that they avoid the gatherings of liars and the assemblies of sinners, so they do not attend them nor approach them. They do this to keep away from mingling with evil and its people, and to protect their religion from anything that may harm it. This is because witnessing falsehood is a partnership in it. Therefore, it has been said regarding looking at everything that the Sharia does not permit: they are partners of those who commit sin, because their presence and gaze are evidence of their approval of it, and a cause for its existence and increase. This is because what drives them to act is their appreciation of the sight and their desire to look at it. In the admonitions of Jesus, son of Mary, blessings and peace be upon him: 'Beware of sitting with sinners.'
It is also possible that they do not bear false witness, so the addition is omitted and the addition's object takes its place. And from Qatadah: 'The gatherings of falsehood.' And from Ibn al-Hanifiyyah: 'Entertainment and singing.' And from Mujahid: 'The festivals of polytheists.' 'Laghw' refers to everything that should be disregarded and discarded. The meaning is: and when they pass by those engaged in laghw, they pass by, turning away from them, honoring themselves by not stopping to engage with them, as Allah, glorified and exalted is He, says: 'And when they hear falsehood, they turn away from it and say: 'To us are our deeds, and to you are your deeds. Peace be upon you; we do not seek the ignorant.' And from Al-Hasan, may Allah be pleased with him: 'They were not made foolish by sins.' It has been said: when they hear insults and harm from the disbelievers, they turn away and overlook. It has also been said: when marriage is mentioned, they turn away from it.
