Commentary
And what is the Most Gracious? It may be a question about the one who is named by it, because they did not know him by this name, and the question about the unknown is with 'what.' It may also be a question about its meaning, because it was not used in their speech as the terms 'the Merciful,' 'the Compassionate,' and 'the Benefactor' were. Or because they denied its application to Allah, the Exalted, due to what You command us, meaning the command to prostrate to Him, as in His saying: 'I commanded you to do good.' Or due to Your command to us. And it was recited with the pronoun 'he,' as if some of them said to one another: 'Should we prostrate to what Muhammad ﷺ commands us?' Or 'Should we prostrate to the one named the Most Gracious, while we do not know what He is?' And in their addition, there is a pronoun in 'prostrate to the Most Gracious' because it is the one being referred to.
