Commentary
An example is: except for whom He wills. The intended meaning is: except for the action of whom He wills and his exclusion from the reward is a saying of one who has compassion for you. He has strived for you in acquiring wealth: I do not seek from you a reward for what I have strived except that you preserve this wealth and do not waste it.
So, your preservation of the wealth for yourself is not of the kind of reward, but he has depicted it in the form of reward and named it as such. Thus, he has conveyed two benefits. One of them is the removal of the suspicion of greed for reward from its origin, as if he is saying to you: If your preservation of your wealth is a reward, then I seek the reward. The second is the demonstration of profound compassion, and that if you preserve your wealth, you should consider your preservation as a reward and be pleased with it, just as the rewarded one is pleased with the reward.
By my life, the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, was with those sent to them in this regard and above it. The meaning of taking them to Allah as a path is their drawing near to Him and seeking closeness to Him through faith and obedience. It is said that the intended meaning is drawing near through charity and spending in the way of Allah.
