Commentary
The supporter and the supporters, like the helper and the helpers. And 'Fa'il' means 'Mafa'il' which is not rare. The meaning is that the disbeliever supports the devil against his Lord with enmity and polytheism. It has been narrated that this was revealed about Abu Jahl, and it is possible that by 'supporter' he means the group, as in His saying: 'And the angels after that are supporters.' As it has come: the truthful and the companion, meaning by the disbeliever: the kind, and that some of them support one another in extinguishing the light of the religion of Allah. It is said: Its meaning is that the one who does this act - which is the worship of what does not benefit and does not harm - is insignificant and belittled before his Lord, from their saying: 'I supported him with it,' if you left it behind your back and did not turn to it. This is similar to His saying: 'Those are the ones who will have no share in the Hereafter, and Allah will not speak to them, nor will He look at them.'
